Who We Are

Built for photographers.
Not tick lists.

We started Wildlight because we noticed a gap in the market. A photographer would join a birding tour, excited, well-prepared, only to spend two weeks on a bus behind a spotting scope they couldn't use, ticking species they could barely see.

That is not what photography is. Photography is about light: It is about positioning, patience, and being in the right place before the moment arrives. None of that fits inside a birding itinerary built around species counts.

So we built something different.

Light first, always

Every site, every departure time, every position we put you in is chosen around the light. Not the bird list. Not convenience. We have stood in enough wrong spots at the wrong time to know exactly how much it matters.

Small groups, real attention

We like small numbers. That way we can give every person in the group genuine, individual attention. We are not going to impose a regime of settings and howtos, just a friendly guide to help you achieve the best from your equipment.

Ethical and ecological

We only work with sites and guides who operate with integrity. no cutting corners for a better frame. The places we go are extraordinary and we intend to keep them that way.

Off the obvious path

We have researched and found a number of locations that do not appear on the standard itinerary: the colony sites that most tours drive past. We bring that knowledge into every tour we run. We know you will be really excited with some of our locations.

The gap we are filling

The big operators are good at what they do. They move large groups efficiently across a lot of ground and come back with long species lists. If that is what you want, they will serve you well.

But if you are a photographer, if what you care about is coming home with images that stop people mid-scroll and hold something of the real quality of a place, you have probably noticed that those tours were not built with you in mind. Photography is an afterthought for most of the big operators.

We exist for the photographers who have felt that gap and wanted something better.

Sunset over the West African forest, sky layered in amber and rose

Ghana, November. The light that made us start this company.

New company. Not new experience.

We will be honest with you: Wildlight is a young company. We do not have a decade of tour reviews behind us, and we will not pretend otherwise.

What we do have is years of fieldwork in forests, on rivers, at colony sites across West Africa and Europe, learning how light affects our photography, where birds are and when, and how to put a photographer in the right place at the right time. We have the contacts, the local knowledge, and the genuine passion that no amount of corporate scale can manufacture.

The absence of a long track record does not diminish the quality of what we offer. If anything, it sharpens it. Every tour we run matters to us in a way it simply cannot to an operator running forty departures a year.

How we work

Before you arrive, we brief you properly: not just on species but also on technique, we position you, not just point you. In the evenings where convenient, we review images together, talk through what worked and what to try differently tomorrow.

This is not a guided walk with a camera. It is a photography feast wrapped around some of the most compelling birds and habitats on the planet. There are a limited number of sites where an extra bit of hiking is required, whenever this is necessary we will notify you in advance.
